The University of Surrey hosts a prestigious EPSRC-funded Industrial Doctorate Centre offering an EngD in
Sustainability for Engineering and Energy Systems (SEES). The SEES EngD is a four-year doctorate for
researchers who aspire to key leadership positions in industry. The programme is academically equivalent to a
PhD, but has one major difference; the student (or ‘Research Engineer’) spends the majority of their time
based with a sponsor organisation, working on their commercial research priorities. They return to the
University for short courses, conferences and seminars designed to develop specialist technical knowledge
and exceptional business skills.
An EngD studentship is available with TWI Ltd in Cambridge, United Kingdom. TWI is one of the world’s
foremost independent research and technology organisations, with expertise in solving problems in all aspects
of manufacturing, fabrication and whole-life integrity management technologies. Established in 1946 and with
several facilities across the globe, the company has a first class reputation for service through its teams of
internationally respected consultants, scientists, engineers and support staff.
This project will develop a multi-criteria decision support system to determine optimum engineering solutions
such that the life cycle costs (LCC) and the environmental impact of plant structures and equipment are
minimized. Companies need to manage their plant and equipment by keeping their functionality at predefined
performance levels and, increasingly, the environmental impact of these assets is being considered through the
use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Thus, in the management of assets, the challenge is often to find optimum
solutions such that LCC are minimised, with due consideration given to factors that are included in the LCA.
Objectives of the Project include:
o To develop a multi-criteria decision support system integrating the LCC and the environmental impact of
the selected asset type;
o To apply this methodology to compare various types of assets which have different material and
structural forms and which perform various functional requirements. This will aid in identifying the
optimum asset type for a given functional requirement and in determining measures to improve the
management practice of the assets;
o To show how the methodology created can be applied to other types of assets by way of appropriate
case studies.
The Research Engineer will be based in TWI Ltd, Cambridge.
Person Specification
We are looking for a self motivated and confident individual with exceptional interpersonal and presentation
skills and the ability to work across a range of academic and professional disciplines within a complex
organisational. The suitable candidate will hold a degree in Civil/Mechanical Engineering or Material Science
(at least a 2.1) and preferably an MEng/MSc. They will have some understanding of systems engineering and
an interest in asset management. The ability to conduct quantitative or semi-quantitative analyses compatible
with a decision support framework is vital, as are good analytical skills and an innovative approach to research.
Funding Details
The current stipends for EngD studentships are £19,700 per annum or above (normally tax-free). To be eligible

The Energy and Resources Group, University of California at Berkeley, is conducting a search
for either Assistant Professor (tenure-track), or Associate Professor (tenured). Depending on the
availability of the selected candidate, the appointment will start as early as January 1, 2013. This
position will be for a joint appointment between the Energy and Resources Group (ERG) (50%)
and the Environmental Energy Technologies Division (EETD) (50%) at Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory (LBNL); LBNL is also prepared to provide summer support. These two
institutions are international leaders in exploring economic, environmental, social, technical and
other issues surrounding the transformation of energy into goods and services. Our goal is to
strengthen and expand the energy analysis activities of both ERG and LBNL, and to forge closer

We seek candidates who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship, teaching, and
communication skills, as well as capacity to attract extramural research funding. Candidates
should have publications or on-going projects in the broad area of energy systems analysis. We
expect that the successful candidate will have grounding in quantitative methods, engineering,

SUSTAINABILITY COCKPIT: AN INTEGRATED TOOL FOR ASSESSMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF SUSTAINABILITY IN MANUFACTURING
Two APAI PhD scholarships are available to work on a recently commenced ARC
Linkage Project (2012-204) in which the impact of decisions on Energy, Water, Carbon
footprint on Australian Manufacturing will be examined. Manufacturing requires
resources such as raw materials, water and energy to achieve the transformation
process. Consumption of these resources is naturally highly dynamic depending of the
state of the manufacturing system. A manufacturing plant consists of complex and
dynamic systems of production machines and technical building services. The majority
of the factories have been built in the past without giving much consideration to the
manufacturing process taking place in the factory; hence they are highly inefficient in
terms of water and energy consumption. This problem has been magnified recently due
to the dramatic increase in the cost of energy and water, and the lack of understanding
of the direct link between energy and water consumption and the associated
environmental impact.
This project, in collaboration with the partner organisations ALCOA Rolled Products
Pty, FIP Breaks Australia, PLP Preformed Line Products Australia, IFU Hamburg
Germany and TU Braunschweig Germany, will involve investigation into the
modelling of manufacturing systems and the analysis of the impact of decisions on
Energy, Water and Carbon footprint of a business. The result of this analysis should be
a modelling platform that allows for the analyses and improvement of manufacturing
systems on the cost, lead time and environmental foot-print of the business. The
proposed approach will lead to the development of a software solution to increase the
efficiency of Manufacturing in Australia. The objective of PhD projects advertised will
focus on the development of a Petri net-based process model which will then be linked
to the companies’ value-stream map in order to evaluate the link between traditional
business objectives such as cost, lead time, throughput and the environmental
objectives such as CO2 footprint.
The project will be undertaken through the Life Cycle Engineering Research Group @
UNSW (www.lceresearch.unsw.edu.au). There will be substantial collaboration with
the partner organisations. It is expected the successful candidate will spent substantial
amount of time at the industry during the course of the project.
Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree of at least Honours 1 or 2A standard
or equivalent in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. An experience with
manufacturing environment will be an advantage. This project will provide the
selected candidate with valuable experience in sustainable manufacturing.

A stipend of $27,222 per annum (tax free) will be provided for three years. Additional
taxable support of up to approx. $10,000 per annum may be available through
acceptance of tutoring duties within the School of Mechanical & Manufacturing

Post-Doctoral Researcher «Environmental Input-Output Analysis»

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology has currently an open two year position as a post-doctoral researcher on the area of input-output modeling for environmental accounting and resource indicators. The position is at the Industrial Ecology Programme. The position is connected to the upcoming EU Project Development of a System of Indicators for a Resource efficient Europe (DESIRE). NTNU’s role in the project is in the development of a time-series of input-output tables with added detail on environmentally significant sectors and the integration of environmental extensions provided by project partners. In addition, NTNU will contribute to the analysis of the developed indicators and the prioritization of resources and sectors. The work will extend the development of multi-regional input-output models from the EXIOPOL project to give representations of environmental and economic interactions over time. The work involves investigation of causes of structural change in society (shifts in consumption, technology and economic structure), and the implications for the environment. Handling of large data sets will be required in the project, and significant work is required on both the development of these databases, and in drawing out pertinent results from extensive model outputs. Project outputs are envisioned to provide high level policy insights into the development of key resource indicators over time and across the globe. Applicable indicators cover the spectrum of traditional energy and material resources to critical materials and biodiversity impacts.

The Industrial Ecology Program (IndEcol) is an interdisciplinary research and teaching program managing its own International MSc program and PhD program. IndEcol is well recognized for its work in the areas of life-cycle assessment, material flow analysis, and the use of input-output analysis for environmental assessments, as evidenced by numerous publications and international prizes.

The current research activities are funded by national and European agencies, as well as industrial partners. There is a long tradition fundamental model development, as well as industrial and policy applications. The Industrial Ecology Program is well integrated in the international research community through the participation in EU projects and the participation in International Society for Industrial Ecology and International Input-Output Association working groups. Key faculty members currently serve as lead authors of the IPCC, the UNEP Resource panel and IEA task force. IndEcol currently participates in three EU FP7 projects with contributions based on input-output analysis and has two faculty members, a senior researcher, and a PhD student involved in this activity. This area will be further strengthened in accordance with IndEcol’s strategy and a new PhD position has already been advertised.

The candidate must have a PhD in a related field of research and must have a strong record recent scientific output. Relevant backgrounds include PhDs in economics, applied mathematics, operations research, and industrial ecology. A knowledge of industrial ecology including life-cycle assessment and material flow analysis is a strength. A proficiency in data gathering and manipulation is important. Candidates should provide evidence of this proficiency, as well as providing insight into methods they have used or would use, and how these methods are applicable to this work. Knowledge of a MatLab or similar programming environment is a prerequisite.

Salaries

Post doctors are remunerated in code 1352, in the State salary scale 57-76, gross NOK 455 900 to NOK 654 600 per annum (before tax). Post doctors are normally remunerated at wage level 57. There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

The appointment of the Post doctor will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges.

Research Fellow to contribute to our ongoing Climate Change in the
American Mind research program (conducted in collaboration with the Yale
Project on Climate Change Communication). The program involves survey
research (including nationally representative surveys, community surveys,
membership organization surveys, etc.), message experiments, in-depth
interviews, and audience segmentation research. The post-doc may also get
involved in other research and programmatic activity at 4C including
collaborations with the public health/health care community, TV
weathercasters, and communities that are planning climate change adaption
initiatives.

Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant social science discipline, and a
track record of published journal articles and/or conference papers on
relevant topics of inquiry including communication (climate change,
science, environment, public health, and/or political communication),
behavior change, applied psychology, political science, the built
environment, social-ecological models, and/or informal science education.
Proficiency in survey research and quantitative data management and
analysis is also a requirement. Experience with qualitative data
collection, strategic (program) planning, professional development, and
climate science are preferred, as are excellent organizational skills,
ability to communicate verbally and in writing, and the ability to adapt
to the changing demands of a dynamic research environment.

The newly-formed Energy and Resource Systems Analysis Lab (ERSAL) is
developing novel modeling methods and tools for optimizing industrial energy
and resource systems from environmental and economic perspectives. Our work
leverages techno-economic modeling, life-cycle assessment, spatial and
temporal systems analysis, and supply chain modeling methods to assess the
benefits of next-generation industrial processes, materials, and products to
guide manufacturing and policy decisions. We seek several recent Ph.D.
graduates with skills and interests in these fields to support and lead
current projects in one or more of the following areas: (1) supply chain
energy and resource technology options modeling; (2) best-practice
technology and thermodynamic benchmarking of different sectors for
industrial cap and trade policy; (3) spatial and temporal life-cycle systems
modeling of industrial technology insertion scenarios; (4) full cost/benefit
accounting of energy- and resource-efficient industrial technologies; and
(5) improved industrial systems analysis approaches in regional and temporal
energy and climate systems models.

2. Outline of Economic Analysis Team

The Economy and Environment Group (EE) aims to conduct quantitative assessments of sustainable development policies at both national level and regional level for Asia and the Pacific. Specifically, EE research activities focus on (i) development of integrated policy assessment tools for sustainable development, (ii) trade and environment issues with special focus on embodied emissions, and (iii) green economy and green growth related issues.

3. Duties and Responsibilities

An associate researcher shall do the following tasks under the guidance of the Group Director, Deputy Director and other senior colleagues:

-	Contributing to the development of integrated policy impact assessment tools and their application to policy analyses, particularly to the issues of resource efficiency improvement and sustainable ecosystem service use.
-	Conducting econometric analysis related to EE studies.
-	Implementation of other necessary research tasks and participation in outreach activities which EE conducts.

4. Qualification

(1)	Education - Master degree or above, or equal qualification in environmental economics, resource economics or relevant disciplines is required.
(2)	Knowledge and Experience a) Knowledge of or practical experiences in economic modelling (e.g. CGE) are required. b) Good skill in econometric analysis is also required. c) More than three-year work experiences in research institutes, universities and international organisations are valuable assets.
(3)	Willingness and ability a) Demonstrated professional competence with a track record of high quality publications and research project implementation experience. A few years job experience of project research is desirable. b) Ability to work cooperatively as a team worker, who can interact with a broad range of stakeholders, government officials, NGO and institutes.
(4)	PC skills a) Basic computer literacy required.
(5)	Language proficiency a) Should be fluent in English as a working language. b) Working level of Japanese ability would be an advantage.

5. Term of employment

In principle a single fiscal year contract, from 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2013. However, contract could be renewed depending on the performance and volume of work at that time. Precise starting date will depend on the individual case.

Chaired Faculty Position in Sustainability at INSEAD

INSEAD, the global business school with campuses in Europe (France), Asia (Singapore) and the Middle East (Abu Dhabi), has an opening for a Chaired Position in Sustainability.

We are looking for a mid-career or senior faculty member. The person should have a strong research agenda and a proven track record in sustainability. He or she is expected to develop both our research as well as our teaching activities on the broad subject of sustainability (MBA, EMBA, Executive Education, and PhD). Given that INSEAD is a Business School, it is expected that the chairperson will have a keen interest in sustainability issues with relevance to the business world, e.g., letting the research agenda be fed by business-relevant problems, as well as communicating research findings to the business community through publications, teaching and other forms of dissemination.

The expectation is that the person will join one of our academic areas (e.g. Technology and Operations Management, Strategy, Economics and Political Science) and perhaps teach in those while focusing research on sustainability. We are open about which academic area should host this chair.

INSEAD has already developed a solid knowledge base in sub-areas of sustainability given the strong interest from its business partners, alumni and current students. Faculty members broadly interested in sustainability are gathered in a research center in an effort to foster synergies and interdisciplinary work. The chairperson will be expected to play a central role in the further development of these initiatives.

A post-doctoral fellowship is available at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He/She can join us as soon as possible for a one year contract. That can be renewed for another year to a total of two years. The applicant must be able to use English and research and publish refereed journal papers during their tenure at the University of Johannesburg. Extension of contract to two years will depend on the ability to conduct good research and to publish in good journals. The applicant can chose the area of research. It can be in any area. Some of the areas we active in are solar-thermal power Life Cycle Assessment (sustainability), solar-thermal LCA (sustainability), General LCA of any chosen area, industrial engineering, energy efficiency, ethanol and renewable energy systems.
