I would like to remind you that the call for papers for the Cambridge International Manufacturing Symposium is now available and the deadline for submitting abstracts is 30 June 2012.

We are delighted to announce that keynote speakers for the academic day will include:

The International Conference on Sustainable Development 2012 is jointly presented by the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Law (ICIRL), the Centre for Research in Social Justice and Policy (CRSJP) at Laurentian University and the Ontario International Development Agency (OIDA) in Canada, and PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies, Montclair State University, New Jersey, USA.

This conference has the following objectives
• to provide an interdisciplinary forum on global sustainable development for practitioners and academics;
• to foster dialogue among various stakeholders, including senior level policy makers, academics, and practitioners;
• to propose multidisciplinary strategies for economic, sociopolitical, cultural, and institutional changes;
• to allow stakeholders to share their experiences and research results about all aspects of sustainable human and social development;
• to discuss the practical challenges encountered in promoting sustainable development and the solutions adopted; and
• to find global partners for future business or research collaborations.

Paper Submission All full paper submissions will be peer reviewed and evaluated based on originality, technical and/or research content/depth, correctness, relevance the conference, contributions, and readability. The full paper submissions will be chosen based on technical merit, interest, applicability, and how well they fit a coherent and balanced technical program. The accepted full papers will be published in the refereed OIDA International Journal of Sustainable Development. PRELIMINARY PROGRAM

This conference is the prime forum for renewable resources, industrial biotechnology and biorefineries in Europe and aims at bringing together academic researchers, industrial experts, policymakers and venture capital providers to discuss the challenges emerging from the transition towards a bio-based economy and to present new developments in this area.

THE CITY

Toulouse is France’s fourth biggest city and is ideally situated between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean in the South-West of France.

Its 2000-year-old history shows an architecture of brick and tiles which are typical of the cities, villages and farms of the Midi-Pyrenees region. Reflections of the golden light on the brick of Toulouse have given it the name of ‘Ville Rose’ (Pink City).

Toulouse is a very lively city. There’s nothing like a stroll around the historic centre, walking alongside the Garonne and the Canal du Midi, or stopping in one of the many cafés with terraces that spill out onto the streets.

Background and purpose

The International Society of Industrial Ecology (ISIE) is a research community delivering interdisciplinary research on policy relevant questions that address both industrial systems and the environment. The MFA ConAccount Section of ISIE provides a community of practice for socio-economic metabolism research and enables such research.

The main theme

We invite researchers and practitioners to a meeting discussing advancement of methods for analyzing the dynamics of physical interactions between socio-economic-environment systems and their drivers on multiple scales, as well as applying those methods on issues of strategic relevance for governments, industry and societal stakeholders.

Conference location

The conference location is the Technical University Darmstadt, one of Germany‘s top-three technical universities. The university is situated in the city of Darmstadt, which is located in the heart of Germany, just 30km away from the metropolis Frankfurt/Main and just 20 minutes from the international airport Frankfurt/Rhein-Main.

Papers will be presented in oral and poster sessions and all accepted papers will be published in the Book of Proceedings. Authors wishing to submit a contribution should read the following instructions carefully ans send an abstract to the address given below.

The abstract, single spacd in English, should include:

Against the backdrop of a highly globalized and competitive marketplace, this session will interrogate the interplay between two important concepts. Acknowledging that ‘a product is a process’ (Callon et al. 2002), we are interested in how specific ‘qualities’ or ‘agents of difference’ can be added to products at multiple stages of the value chain. In some cases products are positioned based on material properties including the design, inputs, production process, labour arrangements and distribution. However, immaterial or symbolic qualities including the reputation of the brand, marketing, the retail experience and consumption as identity construction are also key sources of value and differentiation. In an increasingly saturated marketplace, promising products that are high quality, ethical, authentic, green or exclusive has become a popular strategy to ‘stand out in the crowd.’ Yet, the mechanisms through which these qualities are imbued, projected and evaluated remain poorly understood.

In general, studies tend to focus on one aspect of the process, such as design or marketing, without considering how the qualities of a product can evolve over time. Although the qualification process is understood to be socially constructed through the interplay between users, suppliers, intermediaries and producers across the entire value chain, empirical examples that highlight this interplay are difficult to find (Jansson and Waxell 2011). Similarly, there has been a consistent lack of research explicitly addressing the geographic origins and dimensions of specific qualities. Experiences have often been used to help differentiate and add value to traditional goods and services but there is a need to study them as products in their own right (Lorentzen 2009). Moreover, it is imperative to explore the implications of digital technologies and spaces for existing strategies while also theorizing the ability of virtual worlds and online forums to hybridize and create new qualities and mechanisms of qualification. Finally, it is important to apply a critical lens to these processes and to question the effectiveness and sustainability of these market dynamics.

This session will provide a forum to highlight and unpack research from diverse conceptual and empirical perspectives that address the use of qualities as agents of difference and the qualification process.

Potential topics may include but are not limited to:

Conceptual critiques of the usefulness of quality and qualification
The construction of qualities and value within socially embedded networks
The role that producers, intermediaries and consumers play in the construction of qualities
The active and reflexive role that economic agents play in the positioning, projecting and qualification of products
The relative and evolving importance of different qualities
Case studies on quality-driven fields such as food, craft and manufacturing and emerging sites of quality including services, experiences and the cultural industries
The implications of digital technologies and spaces on the creation and consumption of new and existing qualities
The spatial dynamics of the construction of quality
How specific places are increasingly viewed as products that can be produced, marketed and consumed
Challenges and innovative solutions to the maintenance and sustainability of specific qualities and the qualification process more broadly

2nd CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee of the "CRETE 2012" International Conference on Industrial and Hazardous Waste Management, I would like to inform you that the following Special Workshops have been planned:

Characterization, Restoration and Management of Refineries
Refineries represent common heavy industrial sites that develop important soil and groundwater contamination problems, mainly due to uncontrolled leaks. The management of such contaminated sites, especially when the refineries are under operation, is a complicated issue that demands specialized knowledge, experience and technolgy. During this "CRETE 2012" Special Workshop, case studies, as well as optimum management and restoration approaches, are to be presented.

Mines Restoration and Mines Leachates Treatment
Mining activities can be considered as heavy industrial activities that may bear severe risk and hazardousness, depending on their paricular characteristics. Leachates treatment, hazardous materials management, safety measures, as well as abandonded mines restoration are some of the basic topics that are expected to be explored and presented during this "CRETE 2012" Special Workshop.

Asbestos Materials/Waste Management
Asbestos has been allocated at many industrial facilities, due to its special properties that allowed the production of several asbestos containg products. Since the exposure of its hazardousness and the banning of its use, research has focused on managing abandoned asbestos mines and facilities. Moreover, a lot of attention has been given to the withdrawal, treatment and disposal of asbestos containing materials. During this "CRETE 2012" Special Workshop, the prevailing conditions worldwide, as well as the latest scientific and technical advances, on asbestos management are attempted to be presented.

Authors are invited to submit relevant abstracts, to be presented during these Special Workshops. An extended abstract (at least one, but no more than two full pages), accompanied by the relative Abstract form, should reach the Conference Organization no later than 31st January 2012 .
