–       The role of Industrial Symbiosis in addressing Climate Change and Energy Security;

–       Industrial Symbiosis as a driver of Eco-Innovation and Green Growth;

–       The role of Industrial Symbiosis in addressing Material Scarcity; keeping resources in productive use for longer;

–       Industrial Symbiosis as a tool for Regional Economic Development;

– The application of Industrial Symbiosis in Post Disaster, Post Conflict and Emerging Economies.

Delegate places for IWCAIS 2012 are limited, however we would like to encourage members of the global industrial symbiosis community to contribute to IWCAIS by participating in discussions pre and post conference using the interactive on-line forum and document section on the conference website, www.iwcais.com, which can be accessed by registering as a user to the site.

There are still a few corporate sponsorship spaces available to support the conference which will also ensure your company’s participation in this invite‐only event working alongside international peers from policy, practice, academia and industry from six continents. Acknowledgments of the sponsors ‐ such as the company's name and linked logo ‐ will appear on the conference website and on all event‐related official documentation. In addition, sponsors can become involved through a wide array of different channels, such as sponsoring side events such as site visits and industrial tours or a prestigious gala dinner. If you are interested in becoming an official sponsor of IWCAIS 2012, please contact Michelle Allt on 0121 433 2660 or email: michelle.allt@international-synergies.com

International Symposium "Life Cycle Analysis and Construction 2012" (10 Jul 2012)

Website: http://lca-construction2012.ifsttar.fr/index.php

Numerous research activities about LCA applied to buildings, and more recently to civil engineering, have risen over the past decades. Environmental stakes are particularly important in construction because any initial decision always has long term consequences. In addition the construction sector both generates and recycles huge amounts of waste; it is generally considered as an important contributor to climate change and induces irreversible changes in local environments. To face these stakes, industries invest into so-called « green innovations », and national or local public authorities are demanding scientifically based decision support such as LCA.
For the time being, LCA research appears to be fragmented between LCA practitioners in various construction fields and LCA methodologists. However, LCA practitioners in the construction sector share identical methodological questions. For example, drastic variations which inevitably occur between the early and operational stages of construction projects have led many research institutions to develop their own dedicated LCA software tools. These tools are however seldom comparable, since they generally use different databases and assumptions. Only close cooperation between LCA methodologists and construction scientists can lead to appropriate methodological developments.
The symposium aims at grouping disparate research communities to create a forum for the exchange of recent developments and research results amongst researchers. It also aims at providing an insight into societal demands in the civil engineering and buildings sectors.

In this context, IFSTTAR (resulting from the merger of LCPC and INRETS) and CSTB, in partnership with the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM), the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE) and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) invite you to participate and submit a paper to the International Symposium on LCA and Construction 2012, which will be held in Nantes (France) on July 10-12, 2012

The symposium will be organized over three days. The first two days will be devoted to scientific presentations; the last day will deal with public policies and standardization in the field, on the base of invited presentations.

LIPHE4 7th Summer School: Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM): an innovative approach to energy analysis (17 Sep 2012)

Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism
(MuSIASEM): an innovative approach to energy analysis
September 17−21, 2012
Barcelona, Spain
Purpose of the Summer School
The purpose of the Summer School is to provide an introduction to the theory, the
methodological approach and practical applications of MuSIASEM in order to generate
robust energy scenarios and assess the quality of alternative energy sources. The course
will cover:
Theoretical basis of MuSIASEM: Introduction of innovative theoretical concepts
developed in the fields of hierarchy theory, bioeconomics, bio-semiotics, complex
systems theory, and post normal science, which form the building blocks of the
MuSIASEM approach.
Presentation of MuSIASEM: Description in quantitative terms, using multipurpose
grammars, of the production and consumption of energy carriers (electricity, fuels, heat)
in face of a given availability of primary energy sources and in relation to a desirable
expression of functions in modern economies.
Application of MuSIASEM: Demonstration of the use of multi-level data arrays and the
“sudoku effect” in order to characterize the metabolic pattern of modern society, to
generate robust scenarios, and to assess the quality of alternative energy sources and
technologies.
If sufficient interest exists among the participants, additional theoretical topics can be
added, such as participatory processes and implications of post-normal science.
Course Format
The five-day Summer Course follows an interactive, dynamic format. Morning lectures
are alternated with afternoon working groups. The working groups allow the
participants to address practical, problem-oriented, and policy-relevant research
projects. Participants will be enabled to conduct studies, organized in small groups, on
one of the following proposed topics: (i) comparative, integrated assessment of the
metabolic pattern of different countries; (ii) analysis of scenarios of low carbon
economies; (iii) assessment of the performance of alternative energy sources; (iv)
integrated analysis of a specific sustainability issue proposed by the participants. At the
end of the week the participants are expected to present the results of their group work.
The course language is English.
Participant Profile
The course is aimed at advanced students, researchers, and experienced practitioners.
Participants are expected to have a good command of written and spoken English, and
to have an interest in learning about innovative approaches and ideas related to energy
analysis, integrated assessment, and sustainable development. Submission of a detailed
résumé is required to determine eligibility for participation. For logistic reasons
(formation of working groups), the number of participants is limited to 25 persons.
Admission of eligible candidates in the program is on a first come, first serve basis.
Cambridge International Manufacturing Symposium 2011 and 2012 (20 Sep 2012)

In July this year, the University of Cambridge is hosting the 2011 EurOMA conference, the largest academic conference in Europe in Operations Management, co-hosted by the IfM and the Judge Business School.

As many of our usual academic attendees to the CIM Symposium will be with us during the EurOMA conference, and the inevitable overlap in subjects and delegates, we have decided not to hold our International Manufacturing Symposium in September 2011 but rather focus on specific invitation only workshops to support key elements of our Symposium agenda.
Sustainable Innovation 2012 (29 Oct 2012)

Date: October 29-30, 2012

Location: Bonn, Germany

Conference website

Rio +20 in June 2012 will focus on the ‘green economy’ with resource consumption, innovation and behavioural change being central to discussions. Resource productivity and efficiency in production and consumption are moving up the global agenda as increasing raw material costs and emerging concern associated with security of supply of critical metals essential for the production of eco-innovative technologies has increased. Discussions in Europe have shifted towards the practicalities of transitioning to low carbon and resource efficient economies and societies. Materials and water alongside energy and food are now being positioned at the heart of the resource productivity debate. The need to radically change consumption patterns has gained increased visibility and enabling higher levels of demand and supply side innovation will be the linchpin in moving forward. The ‘Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe’ published by the European Commission in September 2011 consistently highlighted the need for accelerated innovation in materials, products, services and technologies as key to enabling smart, sustainable growth. Developing an improved framework to accelerate the flow of good ideas for products, services and technologies through R&D to the market is essential to enable resource efficient, low carbon innovation. New business models will be required that catalyse innovation across and beyond the life cycle. Developing systems to ensure ‘closed (materials) loops’ are receiving increasing attention and various approaches are being developed e.g. ‘cradle to cradle’, Product Service Systems (PSS), re-use and sharing models. ‘Designing out’ waste and designing for ‘closed loops’ will be of growing importance as waste gets more expensive and resources get scarcer. Therefore developing products, services and technologies to enable recycling, remanufacturing, reconditioning, product extension and dematerialisation will become an essential element of innovation.

Concept

Sustainable Innovation 12 will provide a platform to discuss the opportunities and challenges related to resource productivity, innovation and lifestyles related to products, services, technologies, infrastructures and business models. Sustainable Innovation 12 will include invited and refereed papers from academics, consultants, entrepreneurs, investors, technology providers, designers, innovation, sustainability managers as well as other business functions. The event will create a unique space for learning, networking and thinking. Delegates will come globally from large companies, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as academia, government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The conference is supported by an international Advisory Board.

Conference Topics

Sustainable Innovation 12 welcomes conceptual and research-based papers focused on sustainable innovation related to resource productivity and lifestyles. Papers should cover sustainability, product, service and technology design, development and commercialisation issues related to the following topics:

V International Conference on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) (24 Mar 2013)

Date: March 24-27, 2013
Location: Mendoza, Argentina
Conference website

In March 2013, the National Technological University of Mendoza (Argentina) will host the V International Conference on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), referred to as CILCA for its initials in Spanish.

The conference will include a scientific program as well as workshop sessions, including topics covering from buildings, petrochemical industry, mining, renewable and conventional energy sources, and services, up to eco-labels, education, and capability development, amongst others. It is expected that the conference will contribute to the enhancement of cooperation between Latin America and other regions of the world, bringing
together participants from the industry, NGO's, academia, and government.

Following the tradition already established by previous CILCA events held in interesting and beautiful places, the CILCA 2013 venue is set in Mendoza, in a region of foothills and high plains. The city is a frequent stopover for climbers on their way to Aconcagua (the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere) and an all-seasons destination for adventure travelers, climbers, hikers, skiers, rafters, bikers, paragliders, trekkers and of course, wine lovers. Mendoza is one of nine cities worldwide in the network of Great Capitals of Wine, and is an emerging wine tourism destination and base for exploring the hundreds of wineries in the region.
For information please see the website http://www.cilca2013.org/
