The JIE invites you to submit articles for a special issue on "Industrial Ecology as a Source of Competitive Advantage in Business" by June 1, 2013. Submission of abstracts for review and feedback prior to that date, while not required, is strongly encouraged.

A complete call for papers can be found at http://www.yale.edu/jie/CFPs/CFP_IE4comp_ad.html

The goal of the special issue is to explore how the concepts and tools of industrial ecology can and do serve as a source of competitive advantage for firms, groups of firms and industry sectors.  Analyses can range from the theoretical and conceptual to systematic empirical analysis to case studies of individual firms, business ventures or strategies. Case studies that specify in quantitative terms the nature and magnitude of the competitive advantage based on industrial ecology are especially welcome.

Two sets of audiences are envisioned for this special issue: those knowledgeable in business - both scholars and industry practitioners - seeking to apply their expertise to the novel environmental concepts that have emerged from industrial ecology and those familiar with industrial ecology, curious to understand how industrial ecology is or can be the basis for profitable business endeavors.

The Journal of Industrial Ecology is an international peer-reviewed bimonthly, owned by Yale University, headquartered at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and published by Wiley-Blackwell.

The third symposium on industrial ecology (IE) organized by the Student Chapter of the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE) focuses on communication and networking among young professionals (graduate students and post-doctoral researchers). The main goal of the symposium is to provide an opportunity for young professionals who perform research in industrial ecology to present and discuss their novel research ideas and experiences, receive constructive feedback, and network with senior professionals in the field.  The theme of SIEYP III is “Applying IE research toward transitions.”  For young professionals in the field, making the concrete connection between their research and work to that of transition initiatives can be a challenge. SIEYP III will provide an opportunity for young professionals to share and learn from each other, how their efforts in the field can be more effectively embedded in sustainability transitions.

SIEYP III will immediately follow the ISIE 2013 Conference. ISIE 2013 is a multi-disciplinary event for engineers, scientists, researchers in the social science, and decision makers in the public and private sectors focusing on science, systems, and sustainability. In 2013 the theme of the ISIE conference will be ‘Strategy for Green Economy’.  Attending both SIEYP III and ISIE 2013 provides an excellent opportunity for young industrial ecology professionals to network with the international community, establishing a network of IE researchers for future collaborations. SIEYP will be a good venue for young professionals to reflect on the information from the ISIE conference and discuss in more detail among peers.

We believe that this conference comes at an important time because of the increased emphasis on sustainability following the recent global summit in Rio de Janeiro. We also believe that our conference has a number of features which will make it the leading conference in the field for 2013. Firstly it coincides with a major drive at Nottingham to emphasise the importance of sustainability both at the University and within the School of Chemistry where we are building the first Carbon Neutral Laboratory in Europe, and possibility in the world.  Secondly, our programme at the conference includes a wide selection of speakers chosen specifically to be as inclusive as possible, bringing together academia, industrial engineers, scientists and all branches of chemistry.

Environmental Impacts of Electronic Technologies, Products,
and Processes: The Search for Sustainable Electronics

246th American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting & Exposition
    September 8-12 2013
    Indianapolis, Indiana

This call for papers is for the session titled "Environmental Impacts of Electronic Technologies, Products, and Processes: The Search for Sustainable Electronics."

Electronic technologies have been growing rapidly throughout the previous 4 decades. Americans currently own more than 3 billion electronic products that have become critical to their way of life and the growing economy. As the average use-life of electronic products gets shorter, however, obsolete products are stored or discarded at alarming rates. This creates new challenges in the management of electronic waste (e-waste). Americans discard more than 400 million electronic items per year; less than 20 percent is recycled, while 85 percent ends up in landfills.

Approximately two-thirds of the electronic devices removed from service remain functional. Although, E-waste represents only two percent of America’s trash in landfills, it contributes 70 percent of all toxic waste.  Most electronic products contain hazardous heavy metals, plastics, brominated flame retardants, barium and beryllium, and valuable elements such as precious metals and rare earth elements.  The risks to human health associated with placing such products into landfills or incinerators where these hazardous elements can enter the air and water streams are high. Hence, there is increasing challenge of reducing the use of virgin materials, recovering useful elements from the waste and protecting human health and the environment from the harmful effects associated with the unsafe handling and disposal of these products (National Strategy for Electronic Stewardship, NSES). Scientific research and technological developments is needed for the designing of greener electronics that minimize environmental impacts across the entire lifecycle of the products and promotes consumer awareness. Electronics design and manufacturing that is innovative, flexible and pragmatic could transform the industry’s energy savings, reduce emissions and conserve resources. Innovative solutions that integrate electronics manufacturing and recycling would allow Americans to sustainably manage the electronics used today, while simultaneously promoting novel and innovative technologies of the future to meet market challenges (NSES).
The topics that would be covered in this session are, but are not limited to:

    - Environmental impacts of electronic products and processes
    - LCA and other assessment tools for the electronic industry
    - Green design of electronic products for extended use
    - Reduction of end-of-life impacts of electronics on the environment

Please submit your short abstracts (150 words or less) for posters and/or oral presentations using the ACS Abstract Submission System (PACS) (http://abstracts.acs.org) by March 18, 2013. Please direct any questions to the session organizers, Dr. Endalkachew Sahle-Demesie (sahle-demessie.endalkachew@epa.gov) and Seung-Jin Lee (lee.seung-jin@epa.gov).

Theme: Disruptive supply network models in future industrial systems: configuring for resilience and sustainability

The 2013 CIM Symposium will focus on the challenges facing modern manufacturing - the latest demands on today’s complex value chains, including key dynamics such as:
    • supply networks becoming increasingly reliant on remote partnerships
    • the proliferation of intermediate suppliers and contract manufacturers
    • emergence of novel ‘downstream’ last mile delivery systems
    • more pressures being felt ‘upstream’ as key resources become increasingly scarce
Any analysis of future industrial systems needs to respond to these challenges and consider how new products, processes and business models should be configured.

On Thursday 19 September, presentations by senior executives from leading firms will describe their approaches and experience managing international manufacturing and supply networks.  Speakers at previous events have included representatives from Rolls-Royce, Wavin, Huawei, The LEGO Group, GlaxoSmithKline, Caterpillar and General Motors.

The second day will review latest research.  As usual, we plan to use the opportunity to take stock of the field and emerging key ideas, identify the changes going on around us and explore the priorities for both research and practice.

International Conference on Resource Efficiency in Interorganizational Networks

    Georg-August-Universität Göttingen (Germany)
    November 13 and 14, 2013

Renewable raw materials are becoming increasingly important as an alternative resource base in industrial networks. Consequently, research for methods improving the efficient use of renewable resources in production processes with by-products is crucial. The aim is cascade utilization, thus the multiple utilization of a raw material before its conversion into energy.

The ResEff brings together interdisciplinary researchers developing strategies and solution concepts for efficient resource utilization. It is therefore a forum for scientific exchange both between experts as well as interdisciplinary groups. The following facets of the challenging topic of resource efficiency in interorganizational networks are covered:

    Track A: Materials and Technologies
o Characterization of Fibres and Particles
o Supply Chain of Renewable Resources
o Usage of Cell Wall Components, esp. Hemicelluloses

Track B: Planning of Production and Value-Added Networks for Renewable Resources
o IS and IM in Value-Generating Networks for Renewable Resources
o Mathematical Optimization in the Presence of Uncertainties
o Modeling of Production and Logistic Systems

Track C: Governance, Coordination and Sales
o Consumer Behavior towards Eco-Friendly Products
o Distribution of Intermediate and End Products from Renewable Resources

The conference will include parallel sessions for presentation of papers in the fields of agricultural and forestry science, mathematical optimization, operations research, marketing, business informatics, production and logistics. Each track contains different sessions for expert talks. The interdisciplinary exchange is fostered through special talks and meetings, where all groups come together.

More information about the organizing DFG Research Training Group 1703 “Resource Efficiency in Interorganizational Networks” is available on the website here!

Session Description (BT3):  Modeling of Production and Logistic Systems
Since renewable materials are used both in the manufacturing and in the process industry, the production of renewable resources has been increased significantly in recent years. Adapting the planning and design of production and logistics systems to the characteristics of renewable materials is a difficult and complex task. Variations in the quantity and quality of the materials lead to uncertainties and imprecision, which have to be considered in the modeling and optimization. Additionally, varying preferences of the participating companies within the supply chain network require a multi-criteria analysis to support decision-making processes.

Within this context the track is dedicated to research on theoretical analysis and applications concerning production and logistics systems with renewable resources. The track is a forum for presenting results of the international research and development work dealing with multi-criteria decision making, the modeling and optimization of logistic networks as well as the handling of uncertainties in production induced by the utilization of renewable resources.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
    • Modeling logistics network for renewable resources
    • Risk potential in biomass supply chains
    • Biomass logistics under uncertainty
    • Multi-criteria decision making
The deadline for submission of abstracts (approximately two pages) is 31 May 2013. Guidelines for submission can be found on the conference website. Submissions are subjected to an independent and professional blind peer review and will be judged on originality, significance, interest, clarity, relevance, correctness and presentation.

A more detailed description of the topic and the submission and review process can be found on the conference website.
