At the International Symposium Sustainable Systems and Technology (ISSST) conference last May, the student chapter board hosted a professional development session entitled, . It was a free event for attendees of the conference and focused on providing information that is particularly relevant for graduate students in nontraditional and interdisciplinary fields. The session featured a diverse panel of young faculty members that spoke about their experience transitioning from being a graduate student to a becoming a professional faculty member. Panelists include Dr. Michael Chester from Arizona State, Dr. Matthew Eckelman from Northeastern, Dr. Gabrielle Gaustad from Rochester Institute of Technology, and Dr. Caitlyn Butler from University of Massachusetts Amherst. We had about 30 students and faculty members attend the event. Topics of discussion ranged from advice on preparing for the job search to career and life balance strategies. Information about the ISIE student chapter was also provided to gain participating from students not already involved in the organization.

Industrial Ecology students are scattered across various departments and their involvement is often limited to ISIE and GRC conferences. To overcome this limitation, a regional student conference on industrial ecology was organized at Potawatomi Inn. It began with the idea of bringing students from research groups in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and others that were conducting industrial ecology research. This was the 2nd Potawatomi Conference in Industrial Ecology.

With a great mix of fun, interesting discussions, and presentations, the week in Oxford was a great opportunity for students to mix and interact with faculty, peers, and some of the founders of IE. The ISIE student chapter organized a panel discussion on IE education and careers, fun social events like punting and soccer, as well as a poster contest.
