The
conference will feature keynote speakers, tutorials, paper presentations, panel
discussions, and poster presentations. Authors are invited to submit papers
describing research, applications, tools, and case studies addressing the
categories listed below. Approximately 30 minutes will be provided for each
paper presentation, including questions and responses. A poster session will be open to all
participants including students.
The program covers the spectrum of issues
for assessing and managing products and services across their life cycle, and
the design, management, and policy implications of sustainable engineered
systems and technologies. General topics
include design for environment, design for sustainability, materials selection,
energy management, end-of-life policy and reuse/recycling, process integration, and institutional
and policy implications of services and technology systems.
Applicants
who wish to present should submit an extended abstract as detailed below. Accepted presenters will have the option to
submit a full paper for the Proceedings
of the 2011 IEEE International Symposium on Sustainable Systems and Technology,
published by IEEE. Starting this year, those who would like to present without
submitting a full paper may still submit an abstract.

How to Submit
Please make your
submission through the START Conference Manager System:
https://www.softconf.com/b/issst2011
Extended abstracts should be 800-1000 words in
length and should explain the subject, originality, and relevance to ISSST
2011. Submissions must specifically
contain the following categories in order to be considered:
(1) Problem addressed, (2) Knowledge of prior work, (3)
Project undertaken, (4) Research
methods, (5) Conclusions
This
initial submission does not require any particular formatting, but please use a
generic layout and font. Abstracts may be submitted for papers and posters on
the same topic, but separate abstracts must be submitted for the paper and
poster, which will be evaluated individually. Extended abstracts will be peer
reviewed.
Types of Submissions
Please review the
options for submission and indicate your choice at the top of your extended abstract. For accepted abstracts, final submissions of
all types are due just before the conference, April 15, 2011. Formatting
full papers and extended abstracts for the IEEE proceedings should follow the
style templates at http://www.ieee-issst.org/.
Abstract Only. Authors who wish to give an
oral presentation must submit an extended abstract but are not required to
extend this into a full paper. Authors
whose abstracts are selected for oral presentation will be notified in December,
2010, and accepted authors will be entitled to register for the symposium at a
reduced rate. At least one author per
paper must register to attend the symposium. Papers or abstracts without a
registered author will not be printed or scheduled for presentation. Those who choose
not to extend their abstracts into full papers are encouraged to re-format
their abstracts for IEEE publication.
Conference Paper. Authors whose abstracts are
accepted are encouraged (but not required) to extend their work into full
papers to be distributed at the conference, either as unformatted conference
papers or as official IEEE conference proceedings (see below). Those authors who
intend to publish full papers will be given priority in selecting presentations. Unformatted conference papers will not be published by IEEE, and so
do not require any special formatting. Conference papers are limited to six pages in length, including
illustrations.
IEEE Conference
Proceedings. These papers
will published in the official IEEE proceedings, and so must use appropriate
formatting. IEEE papers are also limited
to six pages in length, including illustrations.
Poster Sessions. Authors who choose to present a
poster are required to submit an extended abstract, which they may choose to format
for the IEEE proceedings. At least one
author per poster must register to attend the symposium.
Information
for Students
ISSST offers both a
paper and poster competition to recognize student contributions to the
advancement of environmental practices in sustainable systems and
technology. To be eligible, the primary
author must be a student on or after January 1, 2011 and present original work
in an accepted 2011 ISSST conference presentation or poster. Contest
eligibility forms and instructions for submission are available at the
conference website. Students will receive
a discounted on the registration for the symposium.
Additional Information
The venue for the
symposium is being finalized at this time. For information on registration, hotel
reservations, and all other aspects of the symposium, please visit http://www.ieee-issst.org/. We look forward to seeing you in Chicago!
