7th International Conference of the International Society for Industrial Ecology, was held at the University of Ulsan, Korea from June 25 to 28, 2013. 

The conference theme was, “Industrial Ecology: Strategy for Green Economy,” which represents a vision to decouple economic development from environmental and resource impacts, and to promote value creation by reducing environmental and resource impacts.

"Industrial Ecology: Strategy for Green Economy"

Director Rae Kwon Chung served as a career diplomat for the Republic of Korea specializing in global environmental negotiations attending major global conferences from Rio Earth Summit in 1992 to the Copenhagen Climate Conference (COP15) in 2009. He served as Director-General for International Economic Affairs and as Climate Change Ambassador at the level of Deputy Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Korea. As climate negotiator, he proposed, among others, the concepts of NAMA (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions) Registry and of Unilateral CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) and inserted compulsory licensing in Agenda21 in 1992 at the Earth Summit.  As Director of the Environment and Development Division of ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific), he initiated the concept of Green Growth and in 2005 he played an instrumental role in the adoption of the Ministerial Declaration on Green Growth at the 5th Ministerial Conference of Environment and Development of Asia and the Pacific held in Seoul, Korea. He received a personal copy of Nobel Peace Prize 2007 in recognition for his contribution as lead author to the special report of IPCC on technology transfer.
"Industrial Ecology in Context: An Interdisciplinary Framework for Studying Sustainable Urban Systems"

Professor Anu Ramaswami is the Charles M. Denny, Jr., Chair of Science, Technology, and Public Policy at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and a professor bioproducts and biosystems engineering in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Sciences at the University of Minnesota. Ramaswami is among the leading scholars on sustainable urban infrastructure and has seen her work adopted as policies and protocols for developing sustainable cities in the United States and internationally. Ramaswami’s research spans environmental modeling, environmental technologies, industrial ecology, sustainable infrastructure design, urban systems analysis, and integration of science and technology with policy and planning for real-world implementation in communities. She has developed novel interdisciplinary education programs and resources in these diverse areas, through partnerships with cities and communities, as well as inter-disciplinary innovation grants awarded by the US National Science Foundation.
Ramaswami received her B.S. in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology–Madras, India, and her M.S. and PhD in civil and environmental engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She is the lead author of a graduate-level textbook on integrated environmental modeling, and was recently appointed as a lead author on the Chapter on Human Settlements, convened by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Ramaswami serves as chair of the newly founded Sustainable Urban Systems section at the International Society of Industrial Ecology, and represents the United States in various international urban sustainability networks.

"Industrial Ecology for Achieving Resource Productivity in Developing and Emerging Economies"

Dr Rene VAN BERKEL is Unit Chief – Cleaner and Sustainable Production with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), based at its headquarters in Vienna, Austria. In his present role, he is responsible for UNIDO’s contribution to the global Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) programme which is operational in some 50 emerging and developing countries and supports the organization’s Green Industry Initiative. Between 1999 and 2006 he was Australia’s first full professor of Cleaner Production at Curtin University of Technology in Perth and between 1989 and 1999 he held various research and leadership positions at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He is an environmental scientist by education and holds master’s and doctoral degrees from respectively Wageningen University and University of Amsterdam, both in The Netherlands.
Throughout his career, Dr VAN BERKEL has worked at the interface of academia, government and industry to foster the application of cleaner production, eco-efficiency and industrial ecology practices and techniques in a wide range of industry sectors, including manufacturing, minerals, agriculture, food and beverages, health and services and crafts. Since 1993 he has been active in fostering the adaptation and adoption of cleaner production and industrial ecology in developing and emerging economies in particular in Asia and Eastern Europe.
"Brown to Green: An Introduction to the Strategies, Tools and Techniques of Post-Industrial Land Regeneration"

Niall G. Kirkwood is a tenured Professor at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he has taught full time since 1993. He is also founder and director of the Center for Technology and Environment, a research, advisory, and executive education center at the Harvard GSD.   Currently the Center focuses on design reclamation, real estate and land development issues on sites in Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East. He currently holds the Dr Gerard O’Hare Visiting Chair at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, and holds faculty appointments at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, Korea University, Seoul and is on the Advisory Council and External Examiner of the School of Architecture, University of Hong Kong. He teaches, carries out research and publishes on a range of topics related to design, the built environment and the sustainable reuse of land including urban regeneration, environmental site technologies and international site development. His recent English language publications include Manufactured Sites: Rethinking the Post-Industrial Landscape (Taylor Francis/Routledge) and Principles of Brownfield Regeneration (Island Press). His publications in other languages include The Art of Landscape Detail (John Wiley) Chinese, Principles of Brownfield Regeneration (Island Press) Korean (2011), Chinese (due 2013) and Weathering and Durability in Landscape Architecture (John Wiley) Chinese (due 2013). He held the position of Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the GSD (2003-2009), Program Director (1998-2003, 2005-2008) and Advisor, Master of Design Studies Environment Track, (1999-2003). Prior to joining the GSD faculty he was a registered and licensed architect and landscape architect with 16 years of experience in the private sector carrying out land reclamation and urban development projects in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. Professor Kirkwood is also a member of the board of The Clean Land Fund, a non-profit revolving brownfield loan fund based in Rhode Island, and is a member of the Harvard University Committee on the Environment and the Harvard Committee on Health and the Global Environment. He has given keynote lectures internationally in the last five years in Korea, China, Japan, Mexico, Ireland, Germany, Russia including the keynote speech for the 2010 IFLA Annual Conference (Suzhou, China) and 2008 IFLA Annual Europe Conference (St Petersburg, Russia).
