Research Associate in Resource Efficiency in Plastics and Chemical Systems

Fixed-term for 2 years (if the post holder is full time)

If part time the duration will be longer.

The post must end no later than March 2027.

We are seeking an individual with a strong motivation and a track record of successful collaboration in sustainable engineering to join our team as a Research Associate in Resource Efficiency in Plastics and Chemical Systems at the University of Sheffield. This is a unique opportunity to actively contribute to innovative research and work alongside a world-class interdisciplinary team.

As a Research Associate, you will be an integral part of our vibrant and inclusive interdisciplinary international team in Japan and the UK. Your primary focus will be on conducting material flow analysis and life cycle analysis for resource efficiency in plastics and chemical systems. Your work will involve crafting a comprehensive repository of data and greenhouse gas emission mitigation strategies that address the pressing environmental challenges faced by the chemical industry in different regions including Europe and Asia.

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE), University of Sheffield is recognised as one of the top 5 Chemical Engineering Departments in the UK and is a thriving department within the University's Faculty of Engineering. CBE consists of 43 academic staff, 45 research staff and technicians, 20 support staff, and over 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Department has a world-class research environment that was ranked number 1 by the Research Excellence Framework 2014. The internationally acclaimed research receives funding from government and industrial sources in the UK and globally. The Department has also been honoured with a Silver Athena SWAN Award and two gold awards for Green Impact.

You will also be part of the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures (GCSF) which unites a diverse group of 140 professionals, including social scientists, scientists, engineers, medics, and researchers from the arts and humanities. The aim is to encourage collaborations and foster connections between various fields, as well as academia, industry, and policymaking. This will enable the development of innovative solutions to address sustainability challenges. Additionally, you will have the chance to engage closely with other Research Associates affiliated with the GCSF.
