    Title:  Post-doc

    Institution:  Université Lavalm,

    Location:  Quebec City, Canada

    Project description

    The suggested project includes 3 components. First, we would like to investigate the cost of the environmental externalities in an actual construction project. Environmental externalities refer to the economic concept of uncompensated environmental effects of production and consumption that affect consumer utility and enterprise cost outside market mechanisms.  As a consequence of negative externalities, private costs of production tend to be lower than total “social” costs. It is the aim of the “polluter/user-pays” principle to prompt households and enterprises to internalize externalities in their plans and budgets. A project will be identified within our partner portfolio, possibly a project with an already realized LCA. Then externalities will be identified, quantified, costed and ranked in term of importance in a construction project. Finally, these costs will be taken into account in an economic input–output life cycle assessment or in a life cycle cost analysis. This could be achieved under an attribution of externalities per m2 of building.

     Second, in support of the expansion of the prefabricated and modular housing industry, one of our partners would like to have LCA data of both on site et prefab house for the main export markets. Our objective is to see if the environmental footprint of this industry could be an argument in favor of the prefab housing industry.

    Finally, we would like you to support the graduate students of the CIRCERB with the LCA component of their project.  The subjects of these projects could range from the use of LCA as a product design tool to whole building assessment.

    Research area

    Environmental life cycle assessment, life cycle costing.

    Starting date: As soon as possible

    Department: Wood Sciences (The work will be performed at Université Laval in Quebec City).

    Main Supervisor: Pierre Blanchet (https://circerb.chaire.ulaval.ca/equipe/professeurs/titulaire)

    Candidate profile: Holder of a Ph.D. related with life cycle assessment

    Requested documents: CV and a motivation letter

    Location:  Rennes, France

    The French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), is devoted to producing knowledge and innovation in the fields of food, environment, regional development and sustainable agriculture.

    We propose a post doc position based at the research unit “Sol Agro et hydrosystème Spatialisation” (UMR SAS) at Rennes, Brittany, France (http://www6.rennes.inra.fr/umrsas/).

    Our group is dedicated to the evaluation of the environmental impacts of agricultural production systems. Our studies follow two main objectives:

    ·              The development of methods for the environmental evaluation of farming systems. Life Cycle Analysis is at the basis of our methodological work.

    ·              The evaluation of existing and new production systems. Work on pig production, fish production systems, dairy systems and on the evaluation of environmental impacts and ecological sustainability at the level of a farming region is ongoing.

    Research project:

    The present position called “environmental evaluation of insects biorefinery systems for trout and poultry feeds production  using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)”, is included in a large research project:  ANR DESIRABLE (http://www.agence-nationale-recherche.fr/suivi-bilan/environnement-et-ressources-biologiques/systemes-alimentaires-durables/fiche-projet-alid) involving teams of several different private companies and French research institutes (Ynsect, IPV Food, INRA, IRSTEA, Agroparistech…). This project is focused on the sustainability assessment of the ingredients coming from an insect biorefinery, to be a sustainable alternative to fish and soybean meal in fishes & poultry diets.

    The project aims to produce environmental impact indicators applied to different technical and geographic contexts of insect’s production and processing, feed production, and finally poultry and trout productions, using the LCA methodology. The method will be adapted according to the production systems and the regional backgrounds.

    This postdoc project focuses on 3 points questions:

    1-     the adaptation of the approach based on attributional LCA developed by our research unit, to insects production, processing and use as ingredient in animal feed (trout and poultry)

    2-      the development of a consequential LCA taking into account the economic market changes in feed production sector (Coll. Catherine Macombe, IRSTEA)

    3-     The inclusion of uncertainty analysis in both attributional and consequential LCA.

    Applicant profile:

    Applicants should have a PhD in environmental science, natural resources management, animal production, farming systems research, agronomy or a closely related field. Experience with environmental assessment approaches is desirable, especially on Life Cycle Assessment. Ability to work in a team and verbal and written communication skills are required. Basic knowledge of the French language is appreciated, but not necessary.

    The positions are open to both French and non-French candidates.

     Operating conditions:

    Title: Research Engineer

    Institutions: Context Irstea
    http://www.irstea.fr/en/institute

    Location: Aubière, France

    Deadline: 30 September, 2015

    Context

    Irstea is a French public research institute in science and technology for environment and agriculture. The SAFIR research team (Strategies for improving the organic waste management schemes and reducing their impacts) - which the post is attached to - studies the environmental and sanitary impacts of effluents and organic waste management as well as the organizational and technical aspects of these sectors.

    Position in research team

    You will work for a research project named BIORARE (including Irstea, INRA Narbonne, LGC Toulouse and Suez Environment) funded, since 2010, by the French National Research Agency (ANR) throughout the call "Biotechnologies and Bioresources" as part of the "Future Investment" program. BIORARE is based on a fundamentally innovative technology: the microbial electrosynthesis which allows the recovery of organic waste in added value molecules for green chemistry. BIORARE implements a bio-electrochemical system (BES) coupled to a biogas plant for solid waste. You will be involved in support of the Work Package 4 (WP4) of this project.

    Activity description

    WP4 concerns the implementation of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach for assessing the environmental performances of the BES. In the early years of the project, BES and its insertion in a biogas sector (organic waste management through anaerobic digestion) were modeled for the production of bioethanol thanks to GaBi 6 (LCA software). Furthermore, the sensitive parameters and possible ways of improving the BES system have been identified from an environmental point view. The remaining work consists in:

    • Improving the robustness of the model already realized following the progress of the partners;
    • Modeling another target molecule with higher added value from the corpus of molecules identified in market research (instead of bioethanol);
    • Realizing an analysis of uncertainties thanks to the use of parameters and their variation;
    • Participating in the "consortium" publication.

    Over time, you will be able to analyze and help to ecodesign industrial strategies for this process.

    Main spokesperson

    At Irstea – Rennes: Lynda Aissani (WP4 coordinator). In close collaboration with Théodore Bouchez, coordinator of BIORARE project at Irstea – Antony. Finally with the whole project consortium.

    Training and experience

    Engineer or PhD in environmental sciences and/or Process Engineering

    This position requires good knowledge in environmental assessment and process engineering or chemical engineering. Some knowledge of uncertainties analysis is desired. Good writing skills, strong interpersonal skills, a strong sense of organization and fluent English are required.

    Position taking: before the end of 2015 And position type : fixed-term contract of 1 year

    To apply for the position: please send your curriculum vitae and your cover letter to lynda.aissani@irstea.fr until Wednesday, September 30th 2015
