ISIE Leadership Roles and Responsibilities
The President, Executive Director and Administrative Secretary work closely together in providing leadership for and management of the Society to ensure that it thrives in its mission. They help shape and implement effective policies and procedures for the organization. They also help create the environment for valuable and productive working relationships between the Council, Committees, Staff, Members, internal groups such as Subject Sections and outside parties.
The Executive Director has the lead responsibility in the administration and operation of the Society. Key areas of responsibility include the ISIE conferences and other events, financial management, communications and relationships with Subject Sections and the Student Chapter, fundraising, maintaining and updating bylaws and recruiting new members. The Executive Director has supervisory responsibility for the Society’s staff.
Working together, the President and Executive Director are responsible for setting the agendas of quarterly Council meetings. With the Treasurer, they are responsible for reviewing annual budgets and proposing them to Council for approval.
The President has the lead responsibility for setting goals and policies for the Society. The President’s areas of responsibility include setting goals (e.g., net income, membership, scope of scientific activities), convening and chairing meetings of the Society’s Council, representing the society at conferences and other events and developing relationships with other organizations. The President is an ex officio member of the Management Board of the Journal of Industrial Ecology
The office is responsible for facilitating communications with Committees and Council members, disseminating information and announcements to the membership and assisting Society members as needed. The ISIE office handles the financial details of the Society and works closely with the Executive Director, the Council and Finance Committee on budgets, fundraising and reporting. The ISIE office also works closely with the Journal of Industrial Ecology’s publisher on maintaining membership records and meeting the needs of the Society’s members.
The Treasurer of the ISIE is responsible for organizing the Finance Committee and serving as the Chair of the Finance Committee. On this Committee, the Treasurer creates an annual Treasurer’s Report and presents the report at Council meetings along with the financial status of the Society and recommendations. The Treasurer will work closely with the ISIE office on financial updates and report any significant issues to the President and the Executive Director.
The Secretary of the ISIE is responsible for keeping minutes at annual Council Meetings and performs other duties as prescribed by the Council.
The Council responsibilities are set forth in the By-laws. In addition to the statutory duties and responsibilities, the elected Councilors shall each serve as a liaison member of one of the Committees. The President shall appoint these posts.
The Nominating Committee helps to creates a slate of candidates for all open positions during the election cycle for the Society each year. The committee is responsible for creating a transparent election process and managing the process. The Committee also re-evaluates position descriptions of the Council members and communicates with ISIE staff on election processes. More on the election process can be found here.
