    The US Hub of the Future Earth Permanent secretariat is seeking a director. Future Earth is the global research platform providing the knowledge and support to accelerate our transformation to a sustainable world ( Global Hub Directors work with and report to the Executive Director. Together with the Executive Director, the five Global Hub Directors form the Executive team responsible for the overall leadership of the secretariat.

    The U.S. Hub Director will have the overall responsibility for the leadership of the Colorado based hub for Future Earth jointly administered between the University of Colorado at Boulder and Colorado State University in Fort Collins. This will be a 3-year appointment, commencing in 2015, with the possibility of extension subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.

    Job Description

    The USGS Southwest Biological Science Center seeks a dynamic and effective leader with a background in river ecosystems research to serve as the Chief of the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC) and leader of SBSC’s River Research and Restoration Group. This is a permanent, full-time position at the GS-15 level under series 0401 (biologist) or 1315 (hydrologist) in the Federal service. Salary range is $116,021-$150,830.

    Duties include:

    • Leading GCMRC efforts to understand effects of Glen Canyon Dam operations on the physical, biological, and cultural resources of the Colorado River ecosystem in Glen, Marble, and Grand Canyons.
    • Working as principal scientific advisor to the Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program on matters of river science as related to the Colorado River.
    • Providing scientific and technical leadership for the planning, development, and implementation of original research and monitoring of river ecosystems in the Southwest, especially the large main-stem segments of the Colorado River and its major tributaries.
    • Providing leadership and direction to a staff of 50 to 60 permanent, term and temporary employees.
    • Building and maintaining cooperative relationships with a broad group of stakeholders, including Department of the Interior and USGS leadership, Department of the Interior agencies, Department of Energy agencies, American Indian Tribes, Colorado River Basin State agencies, not-for-profit organizations, and other related organizations.

    Candidates are expected to possess strong leadership and management abilities, scientific knowledge of river ecosystems, familiarity with water and resource management laws and policies, and experience with communicating science results associated with highly visible and controversial topics to resource managers and policy makers.     Work environment

    Title: Material and Product Recycling Design Engineer

    Job Description:

    Apple's Environmental Technologies team is seeking an experienced engineer to manage investigations into material and product recycling. Areas of focus include material recovery technologies, material extraction methods, material separation, product disassembly, and design for recycling. The candidate will be responsible for developing a roadmap of recycling technologies that address all the steps in the process from initial product disassembly through to final material recovery. The candidate will be expected to identify and evaluate novel material recovery methods, manage proof-of-concept trials with internal teams and third-party recyclers, work with Apple’s recycling team on implementing new technologies at recycling sites, and work with internal product design teams on integrating features that better enable product disassembly and material recovery.

     Key Qualifications

    • Knowledge of material life cycles, specifically end-of-life options for material recovery and recycling, with a particular focus on materials used in consumer electronics and industrial manufacturing.
    • Expertise in developing and implementing novel recycling technologies, particularly on electronic products
    • Experience with developing process models and quantitative analyses for material extraction, synthesis, processing, recovery, and recycling
    • Knowledge of metal recycling processes, including new, emerging technologies in hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, and biometallurgy
    • Understanding of best practices for design for environment, design for recycling, and an understanding of environmental regulations and standards applicable to the design of electronic products
    • Familiarity with life-cycle assessment methods or with other environmental-impact assessment methods, including modeling approaches and applications
    • Comfortable with developing assumptions, working and making decisions with limited and imperfect data, and quantifying and identifying sources of uncertainty.
    • Minimum three years experience driving environmental or recycling initiatives in industry
    • Self-starter with a proven ability to influence others
    • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
    • Excellent project management skills, with experience interacting with interdisciplinary project teams

    The Environmental Studies Program at Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Assistant Project Manager for Environmental Dashboard.  This is a full-time, one-year, non-continuing grant-supported position, with the potential for renewal.


    The successful candidate will assist in the management, communication, development and assessment of “Environmental Dashboard,” a novel technological system that provides community residents with environmentally and socially contextualized real-time feedback on electricity and water flows and environmental conditions through residential and commercial buildings and through whole cities.  More information on the project can be found at 

    Specific responsibilities include:

    Monitoring progress on all components of the project.  This includes managing and updating task lists and meeting agendas.

    Communicating with community partners and serving as a point person for further development of content for the “Community Voices” component of the project.

    Teaching short lessons in K-12 classrooms on resource use and climate change using the Environmental Dashboard.

    Subject description

    The subject field is broad and aiming to understand, explain and enable broad societal transformation for sustainable urban development. Technological, ecological, environmental, social, cultural, historical, economical, ethical and political dimensions should be integrated and complex forms of co-operation, governance and competition should be considered. The subject field entails analysis of what sustainable urban development has been, what it can be and how it can be realised.


    Employment duties include research, teaching, research supervision and a certain amount of administration. Administration and teaching will comprise a maximum of 25% of the total duties.

    The Assistant Professor will be given opportunities to develop independent research and gain the prerequisite skills for other academic positions with higher requirements for appointment (in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). Following appointment, the Assistant Professor may apply to be examined for promotion to Associate Professor.


    A person is eligible for appointment if they have attained a PhD degree or have the equivalent academic expertise. Persons should have attained a PhD degree or have acquired the equivalent expertise no more than seven years before the end of the application period.     Grounds of assessment

    It is of special importance to consider the applicant's long-term development potential to independently redefine his or her research area and establish independent research activities.

    Research expertise is of special importance in the assessment and can be demonstrated through international publications. Significant importance is attached to the applicant's ability to establish and develop cooperation within different fields in research and education. Ability to collaborate with society at large and to disseminate information regarding research and development work is of significant importance.

    Strong qualifications regarding pedagogy and research supervision are of importance.

    It is desirable that a person who is appointed as Assistant Professor at KTH has experience from research environments other than KTH, equivalent to a post-doctoral period or doctoral degree from another institution. In more practice-oriented fields, experience from other organisations can be equally valuable as a traditional post-doctoral residency at another university.

    In addition, the level of skill with regard to developing and leading activities and personnel shall be taken into consideration. This includes knowledge concerning matters of diversity and equal treatment, with particular focus on equality.

    Special grounds of assessment for promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor

    We invite applications for a PhD position with the project title: 'The responsibility of food companies for healthy food innovations: motivations, drivers and barriers for responsible innovation in the Dutch food sector'. This research will be carried out within the framework of a NWO-MVI project called, Motivations, drivers and barriers for responsible innovation in the Dutch food sector: the influence of a healthy food logo on the innovation agenda for healthy food, in which Wageningen University collaborates with the Dutch Choices Foundation (Stichting 'Ik kies bewust'). The project combines normative-philosophical analysis regarding the responsibility of companies for healthy food (normative ethics) with qualitative empirical studies (descriptive ethics) to investigate the motivations, social-ethical and economic drivers and barriers for food companies to invest in responsible innovations for healthy food, and the direct or indirect impact of front of pack logos for healthy food on companies' contribution to public health. This multi-disciplinary research project combines management science, business and innovation ethics and food technology and nutritional innovations. Various research methods will be applied, such as normative analysis, focus groups and interviews. To overcome gaps in knowledge and/or skills, relevant courses will be offered.

    We ask

    MA/MSc in either (1) business & innovation ethics, (2) philosophy, or (3) business administration with a proven competence and interest in business and innovation ethics. Knowledge of English is a prerequisite.

    We offer
