    Title: LCA Consultant (junior)

    Job description
    In the role as (junior) consultant you will work on a variety of projects about sustainable nutrition and agro production. Our team provides comprehensive program, policy and outreach consulting services in waste prevention, energy conservation, product stewardship, green procurement, water resources and recycling.

     We have an exciting job opportunity for an Environmental Project Consultant/ Outreach Specialist (home-office). This is an ideal position for an experienced consultant looking for flexibility, or an energetic go-getter wanting to flee the cubicle farm. The anticipated work week will range from ten to twenty hours, with possible expansion and growth depending on new work secured. We welcome applicants with unique subject matter expertise who may over time wish to expand the position into new areas of business.

    The Outreach Specialist will train and assist business and community representatives to implement recycling programs and food waste/organics collection, and will provide technical assistance including trouble-shooting, logistics and cost analyses. We are looking for someone who can identify obstacles, solve problems and encourage and motivate others to change behaviors. The consultant/ outreach specialist may also:

    §§ Perform fieldwork providing outreach, assistance and training to commercial businesses; perform waste or recycling audits; create implementation plans and help businesses achieve milestones.

    §§ Support Business Development (BD) by identifying and bringing to fruition new business opportunities with existing and potential clients; form and maintain relationships with partners and others in the business community.

    §§ Lead and participate in research and outreach; attend conferences and present papers with panache.

    §§ Assist with the writing, production, and overall execution of proposals and reports; make recommendations  for  program  improvement.

    §§ Conduct quantitative analyses, including development and  use  of  spreadsheets  and databases.

    §§ Work directly with clients, other consulting firms and subject matter experts.

     Qualified candidates will possess the following:

    §§ An undergraduate degree in biology, engineering, environmental policy, business, or related field (or equivalent experience/education).

    §§ At least 2 to 5 years of relevant project experience in the environmental field, preferably with experience in recycling and waste management.

    §§ Excellent verbal communication skills and effective interpersonal skills. Must be comfortable making phone calls (including cold calls) to diverse individuals/groups and providing presentations/trainings to businesses, volunteers, industry, and the public. Functional Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, or other language may be utilized.

    §§ Ability to engage others, and be energetic, assertive, adaptable, passionate and not easily discouraged, with a good sense of humor.

    §§ Clear and concise writing skills, strong research, organizational and critical thinking skills.

    §§ Demonstrated knowledge and experience with: MS Word, MS Excel, and presentation software to create professional and informative presentations and reports. Knowledge of Publisher, PageMaker or other graphics programs a plus. Website development, WordPress and social media experience a plus.

    §§ Effective business development skills and ability to leverage client relationships. Ideal candidate would be recognized expert with a solid reputation in the field of waste management and/or resource conservation.

    §§ Ability to work effectively with businesses, government  staff,  recyclers,  composters  and waste haulers, and the public in diverse communities and underserved areas.

    §§ Knowledge and expertise in an environmental arena that fosters business development and expansion. Expertise in energy conservation,  water protection, alternative energy,  climate change and other resource management topics a plus.

    §§ Ability to work independently, establish work plans and budgets for multiple  projects, address emerging client demands, and meet deadlines.

    Travel is required, including fieldwork, meetings and occasional work outside normal hours. Must have personal vehicle with ability to deliver recycling containers of varying sizes. Regrettably, a Smart Car or Uber just won’t work.


    This job offers a flexible schedule, a conference/ continuing education training budget and the ability to work primarily from home or the Wi-Fi hotspot of your choice. Pay will be based on experience.

    Sustainability Coordinator Responsibilities:

    This is a cross disciplinary position, intended to facilitate and drive coordination and cross- pollination between Architecture, Interiors, Landscape, Urban Design, Planning, Civil, Ecology, Software Design/ Data Visualization, and Economics disciplines at Sasaki. The following is a list of likely responsibilities, but ultimately the Coordinator will work with a body of sustainable design leaders from the various disciplines to prioritize the Coordinator's responsibilities, and tailor them to their strengths and interests.

    1.        Coordination: Assist in the administration and coordination of all sustainability- related activities, including facilitation of ongoing sustainability initiatives.

    2.        Metrics: Track and maintain records of key metrics in all disciplines. This includes 2030 commitment tracking, reporting, and benchmarking.

    3.        Materials Library: Maintain standards and help the librarian apply them to the materials library. This includes incorporating company and industry initiatives involving health and environmental impacts of materials, communicating with company reps who give office presentations

    4.        Rating Systems: Maintain resources for LEED and other regularly used rating systems.

    5.        Education: Work with others in the office to develop educational and training sessions when necessary to inform staff on trends or resources.

    6.        Eyes up: Maintain a schedule of conference dates and submission deadlines, and assist with submissions when applicable. Assist with the sustainability budget and planning around these conferences. Support attendees with knowledge sharing.

    7.        Research: Support and assist with ongoing research initiatives.

    8.        Housekeeping: Study existing Sasaki building sustainability policies with regards to operations and maintenance, purchasing, food vendors, recycling, transportation,   etc.  Research alternatives. Present to directing committee in effort to establish implementation strategy.

    The Department of Environmental Sciences in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at The University of Toledo invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in environmental sciences with a focus on the land-lake interface within the Laurentian Great Lakes to commence August 2015.  The successful candidate will develop a high quality, externally-funded research program with a broad emphasis on coupled human-natural systems and environmental sustainability.  We seek a new colleague with a strong commitment to collaborative research across disciplines.   The successful candidate must be a dedicated educator and would be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in his/her specialty, and mentor graduate students. 

    The Department ( has 18 research-active faculty with $2-3 million in external research support annually, 40 graduate students (M.S. and Ph.D.), 150 undergraduate majors, newly renovated research facilities and research centers, including the Lake Erie Center, Plant Science Research Center and Stranahan Arboretum.  The University of Toledo is located at the interface of urban regions, the biodiversity of the globally rare Oak Openings ecosystem, the agriculturally-dominated Maumee River watershed, and economically-important and ecologically-productive Lake Erie.     The Managing Director of the Network for Business Sustainability ( is responsible for executing NBS's strategy, including planning, governing, budgeting, fundraising, and recruiting, training and retaining staff.     The Network for Business Sustainability is a publicly and privately funded knowledge management network that provides co-created knowledge resources free of charge. NBS engages in three collaborative processes: embedding, innovating, and dialoguing. It comprises 5500+ members, operates in 3 countries, communicates in 2 languages, and partners substantially with about 100 organizations.


    1. Strategy, planning and governance (40%)

    The incumbent will work with the CEO, NBS's Advisory Board, Global Affiliate Directors and Project Directors to develop the organization's strategy. S/he will contribute meaningfully to this strategy based on a deep understanding of the needs of the organization and its partners as well as the competitive and collaborative landscape. Properties and flows of metals and organic substances in society and the environment has for a long time been an established profile area, e.g. in terms of chemical flows within processes, emissions, water, and industrial residues/waste. System aspects in the energy sector is another example, where the research programme Bio4Energy constitutes a national strategic research investment. At Umeå University there are also many other adjoining areas of research, and it is therefore desirable that the applicant can be included in joint projects with companies and collaboration with other research groups within the University. The development of the environmental systems analysis fleld will thus link many existing research fields at Umeå University. An appointment as assistant professor is mainly devoted to research. The applicant is expected to have a strong background in chemistry, chemical engineering, process-environmental engineering or related research fields.
